Through the stories of 13 detainees in the political wing of Borj Roumi prison, the narrative unfolds. During their imprisonment, the authorities offer them the chance to write a letter of apology to the president in exchange for a pardon and release. All the detainees refuse to write the letter, except Houcine, the only worker in the group, who believes that activism outside the prison, among the people, is more effective than wasting away within four walls, isolated from the grassroots.
This change of opinion leads his comrades in the movement to brand him a traitor, in addition to being disparaged by the official press and harassed by the party militia.
Houcine then locks himself in his apartment, leaving a small prison only to find himself in a larger one.
